How negative marking works

Net marks = correct answers × marks per correct − wrong answers × marks lost per wrong. A skipped question scores zero.

Example, Computer Operator (Paper I), 35 correct and 10 wrong: 35 × 2 − 10 × 0.4 = 66 out of 100. The official qualifying mark is 40 (40%), so this score meets it.

Frequently asked questions

What is negative marking in Lok Sewa exams?

In the MCQ papers, each wrong answer loses marks. In the papers covered here, Nayab Subba, Kharidar and Computer Operator lose 0.4 marks per wrong answer (2-mark questions). Section Officer loses 0.2 marks per wrong answer (1-mark questions). Questions you skip lose nothing.

How do I calculate my score with negative marking?

Net marks are the marks left after wrong answers are taken away: correct × marks per correct − wrong × marks lost. Skipped questions score zero. Example, Computer Operator with 35 correct and 10 wrong: 35 × 2 − 10 × 0.4 = 66 out of 100.

Do unanswered questions lose marks?

No. A question you skip scores zero. Only a wrong answer loses marks, so a skipped question and a wrong answer differ by the penalty amount.

How many wrong answers can I make and still reach the qualifying mark?

It depends on how many questions you attempt. In Computer Operator, if you attempt all 50, you need 25 correct, which allows 25 wrong, to reach 40%. Use the Target tab for your own numbers.

What is the difference between score % and accuracy %?

Score % is net marks divided by full marks, after penalties. Accuracy % is correct answers divided by all questions. With 35 correct and 10 wrong in Computer Operator, score is 66% and accuracy is 70%.

Is it worth guessing when there is negative marking?

The Guess or skip tab explains the marking rules. It is not advice. When a wrong answer costs 20% of a question’s marks, a guess gains and loses nothing if you have a 16.67% chance of being right. This is an average over many questions.

Does meeting the qualifying mark mean I am selected?

No. The calculator compares your score only with the official qualifying mark. Selection depends on the final merit list and the number of vacancies, which this tool does not predict.

My exam is not listed. Can I still use the calculator?

Yes. Choose Custom, then enter the number of questions, marks per correct answer and penalty per wrong answer. A penalty of 0 means no negative marking.

Is this calculator official?
